GreenLight HPS for BPH

GreenLight High Performance System (HPS) laser has revolutionised laser prostate surgery. Powered at 120 watts, it is rapidly approaching “Gold Standard” status for the management of BPH.

What are the advantages of GreenLight laser over the standard TURP (rebore) procedure?

  1. Virtually bloodless surgery — so far none of the large series have shown requirement of blood transfusion during or after this procedure.
  2. Suitable for anticoagulated patients — patients who are on blood thinning medications such as aspirin, plavix or warfarin could have this procedure without needing to discontinue these medications.
  3. Less catheterisation time — average of 24 hours as compared to 48-72 hours with conventional TURP.
  4. Very low risk of post operative urinary discomfort (burning / stinging).
  5. Minimal risk of passing scab tissue through the urine.
  6. Potentially less risk of developing erectile dysfunction.
  7. No risk of developing “TURP syndrome” (for more information on TURP syndrome, please visit www.freemd.com/post-turp-syndrome).
  8. Early recovery.

Advantages of GreenLight HPS 120 watt laser over other types of lasers

  • Very minimal risk of painful urination
  • No scab tissue in the urine
  • Can deal with very large prostate (up to 120 grams)

Who will qualify for GreenLight prostatectomy?

Any patient who suffers with symptoms of BPH.

Now available on the Mid North Coast

GreenLight HPS is now available on the Mid North Coast of NSW. The system is relatively new and has been so far installed in only a few hospitals across Australia (due to its high capital cost). Considering the demographics and population of the Mid North Coast area, predominantly retirees, the Mayo Private Hospital Taree has invested in this equipment.

GreenLight HPS will offer a huge benefit to the local population. Although the running cost of the equipment is substantial, the hospital offers a very reasonable package for needy patients. Privately insured patients will have a minimal or no out of pocket expense towards this procedure.

The Endo Urology Centre also offers GreenLight HPS treatment to patients from outside of the local area, including the Hunter and New England regions.
