PCNL

PCNL is an acronym for Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy.

This procedure is performed to remove large stones from the kidney. It is a major surgery, though it involves making a “keyhole” in the patient’s back to enter into the kidney substance and break up and remove the stones.

The procedure may last up to 2-3 hours depending on the bulk of the stone and intricacies of surgery. After removing the stones, a large calibre tube is left in the “keyhole” which drains out urine and retained blood. A urinary catheter will also be left in for 24 hours. The tube from the back region would be removed within 24-48 hours.

At the time of discharge, one may find some fluid (urine) draining from the “keyhole” which usually stops in 2-3 days. You may be given a small bag to apply over the key hole to avoid soiling the clothes.

In what circumstances should you contact your doctor after having this procedure?

  • If you develop severe back pain (on the operated side) which is not relieved by simple pain medications
  • If the fluid from the keyhole area continues to drain in substantial amounts for more than 4 days
  • If you notice significant blood in the urine
  • If you develop fever, rigor or chills
